Menon urges UK to lift ban on cargo

Civil Aviation Minister Rashed Khan Menon yesterday urged Britain to lift an existing ban on direct freight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) citing security reasons.
“Security system at HSIA has now been upgraded to international standard,” an official statement quoted him as saying as UK Foreign and Commonwealth Department Director General Jonathan Allen called on him at his ministry office.
Britain enforced the temporary ban in March this year while Menon told Allen that Bangladesh on the same month appointed UK’s Redline Securities as consultant for improving overall security system at the airport.
According to the press release, the British official told the minister that UK was monitoring the upgraded security system while foreign ministries of both the countries were also working to this end.
Allen expressed the hope that the ban would be lifted soon.
UK High Commissioner Alison Blake was present during the meeting with the British delegation led by Allen, also attended by Bangladesh’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAB) chairman Air Vice Marshal Ehsanul Gani Choudhury and Additional Secretary of civil aviation AHM Ziaul Huq.
