Govt conspiring to protect perpetrators of minority attackers, says BNP

UNB

BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan yesterday alleged that the government is inventing various ‘conspiracy theories’ to hide and protect those who attacked Hindus in Brahmanbaria and Santals in Gaibandha, reports UNB.
“The minority community members at Nasirnagar and Santals in Gaibandha are in danger. All are saying a minister and intra-party conflict are the main reasons for the attacks on Hindus while a minister’s direct interference caused the other incident (attacks on Santal),” he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “Various conspiracy theories are being invented now to confuse people and divert the incidents to different directions. The consequence of the government’s efforts to politicise the incidents and implicate opposition parties in those to hide the real offenders won’t be good. It’ll divide the nation further.”
Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP), one of the components of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, arranged the programme at the auditorium of Photojournalists Association, marking the 40th death anniversary of national leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani.
Nazrul also alleged that the government is trying to give people an impression that BNP had involvement in Nasirnagar incident by implicating a local BNP ladder in a case filed in connection with the incident. “There’s also a chance to brand any Santal community member as a BNP leader.”
Terming the attacks on minority people an unpardonable offence, the BNP leader said their party wants the perpetrators to be punished through proper trial.
He voiced concern that Bangladesh ranked 22nd among 130 countries in the Global Terrorism Index 2016 due to rise in terrorist attacks last year. “It’s a matter of shame and worry.”
Nazrul, a BNP standing committee member, said the country’s image will be dented across the globe due to such ranking in the Terrorism Index.
He also said united efforts are needed to curb terrorism and militancy.
