Sumon and Saiful are two friends who are preparing themselves for university admission tests after completing higher secondary certificate (HSC) exams. They both reside in the capital’s Gopibagh area. But their coaching centre is at Farmgate. Thus, Saiful is in a fix how to go there regularly. Then Sumon gives him a solution and suggests that he buy a bicycle.
I met them in Old Dhaka recently. They were looking for a suitable bicycle in different shops.
“The traffic condition of Dhaka city begs no description. So, there is no alternative to riding a bicycle for reaching one’s destination on time,” said Sumon explaining the benefit of a bike.
Like the two teens, nowadays many Dhaka residents are giving importance to riding bicycles for the purpose of saving time.
The biggest bicycle market of the country pis in Old Dhaka’s Bangshal, where one can buy both local and international brands. Related accessories for bikes, like front and back lights, bells, helmets and gloves are also available there. The price range for a bicycle from Tk 10,000 to Tk 30,000. Of course, it is noticeable that most of the bicycle buyers are youths who come for the latest models.
Another bicycle rider, Rimon Kumar Karmaker, said: “At first, I used to go to my campus at Karwan Bazar by public bus. But it took a long time from my house in Gopibagh, and I faced so much hassle. So, I brought my bicycle from my village. Now, I can reach my campus on time, without much trouble”.
Like Karmaker, Milon, who has a small cloth business at New Market, prefers to ride a bicycle than use public transport.
“From the very beginning of my arrival in Dhaka, I used to go to my business place on my bicycle. It has dual advantages. It not only helps me to reach my destination without difficulty, but it also keeps my body fit,” said Milon.
Which types of bicycles are suitable for the roads of the capital is the million taka question. Most of the roads have no separate lanes for manual vehicles. Bicyclists have to ride amidst heavy, erratic traffic in the city. Generally, functional brakes, a durable frame and lasting tyres are greatly required to ride on the roads of Dhaka. But the most important thing is to choose a bicycle according to the rider’s height, which will help to make the ride more comfortable.
However, bicycle riders should also be more conscious while riding on the roads. They must follow road rules, like riding on the left lane, and not cut through traffic haphazardly, which poses danger to all road users. A helmet must be purchased along with the bicycle because it helps to save 90 percent of lives in accidents. Besides, new riders are advised not to ride on main roads before going through vigorous practice sessions in open fields or side roads.
Enjoy riding your bicycle. Best of luck!
