Smuggling on rise at Benapole border

The smuggled goods include sari, lungi, readymade garments, fruits, fish, medicine, bicycle, motorcycle, spices and sugar

Smugglers have become active in the bordering areas of Jessore since the beginning of the month of Ramzan.
Consumer goods are being smuggled from India through the border area of Benapole, Sarsha, Chowgacha, Jhikorgacha and Kalaroa upazilas.
The markets in the bordering districts have been flooded with smuggled goods.
The smuggled goods include sari, lungi, readymade garments, fruits, fish, medicine, bicycle, motorcycle, spices and sugar. The smuggled goods are comparatively cheaper than Bangladeshi products.
Factories producing sugar and textile products are worst hit by the smuggling. A section of people of the border areas, including minor boys, girls and women, are engaged in the unlawful business.
A large number of people from Benapole, Navaran, Bagachara, Jamtola, Satmile, Ghowdanga, Tozulpur, Kalaroa, Borgaboxo, Jhikorgacha, Chutipur, Borni, Mashila, Puropara, Bakra and Shikarpurgo bordering areas are seen carrying the smuggled goods by buses during the early hours of the day.
Benapole Bagachaira, Jamtola, Sadipur, Baropata, Putkhali, Doulatpur under Sarsha upazila, Goga, Raghunathpur, Ruddrapur, Agrovhullot in Sarsha upazila. Golbagpur, Atulia, Moutala, Bangdha, Chutipur in Jhikorgacha upazila. Kakdanga, Karalgachi, Madra, Vadhili, Darkeboral, Highhelds, Sultan, Chandurtarta, Goria, Goyalpara, Kadpur, Garalbari, Daudkhile and Jawdanga in Kalaroa and Mashila, Poropara, Jinnahnagore in Chowgacha upazila are considered as the vital smuggling routes.
Officer in-charge of Sarsha police station Enamul Haque, Benapole port police station Apurba Hassan and the Officer in-charge of Immigration and Passports at Benapole Aslam Khan said Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) are mainly responsible to check smuggling.
Commanding Officer of 26 Battalion of BGB said many consignments of imported goods are released from Benapole warehouse with no valid documents. Those are usually brought from India along with the imported goods and are cleared by miss declaration to the Customs by C and F agents.
He said: “Recently, we have seized two covered vans loaded with goods at Amrakhali BGB check post on Jessore-Benapole highway. Of which, one covered van that had proper documents was cleared, but the other one that they seized contained a huge quantity of Indian goods.”
On 11 June, DB police Jessore seized Indian three pieces and shirts worth about Tk 60 lakh.
