An Asian elephant conservation project involving a total investment of 11.5 million yuan from China National Nature Reserve Subsidy Funds was recently launched. According to the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture Forestry Bureau, the project will focus on the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve while taking into account other areas inhabited by Asian elephants.
The project aims to identify the habitat distribution and quality lived in by Asian elephants, as well as making efforts to remove invasive alien species and restore damaged habitats to alleviate food shortages. This will include the establishment of a cross-border joint protection system, as well as the development of a human-elephant conflict prevention system.
From 2011 on, public liability insurance was established for the nationally protected animal species across the prefecture. The existence of public liability insurance has raised the standard of compensation and shortened the claim settlement cycle for accidents caused by nationally protected animal species, in this case represented by Asian elephants. This has effectively alleviated human-elephant conflicts and promoted the harmonious development of man and nature.
