Viqarunnisa shuts door to admission seekers

Viqarunnisa ‘shuts door’ to admission seekers
Viqarunnisa School and College

Students named in the second merit list for admission to higher secondary level in Viqarunnisa School and College yesterday alleged that the institution refused them admission despite availability of vacant seats. Migrating students too were denied admission.
A group of students and guardians said they had tried to enter the college in Dhaka’s Baily Road area several times to seek admission, but were not permitted to do so. They had to return home empty-handed after a long wait.
A woman said her daughter was selected for Viqarunnisa through migration but denied admission. Other guardians made similar complaints.
Some guardians alleged that the college authorities told them that they will first admit their own students before giving the opportunity to others.
“We've come here with the list published by the education board. Then, why is the college refusing admission to our children?” asked the parent of an admission seeker.
When contacted, Viqarunnisa principal Sufia Khatun said there are 33 vacant seats right now. “We didn't admit any admission seeker today,” she added.
Asked about the reason, the principal said, “Let us see tomorrow”, and disconnected the phone.
The chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, Prof Abu Bakkar Siddique, said the college authorities were directed to take admission.
“The students who were selected in the second merit list and migration have to take admission. The list was prepared on the basis of vacant seats,” he added.
The second merit list of 10,726 admission seekers was published on Monday.
After getting the list, admission seekers, including migrating students, across the country flocked to different colleges for admission which will continue today.
Moreover, 52,124 admission seekers who were not selected for any college will get the opportunity to apply for five colleges on the basis of vacant seats without any application fee.
