Happy Birthday to Runa Laila

Today is the birthday of the internationally-acclaimed singer and pride of Bangladesh, she is none other than the melody queen Runa Laila. When she takes a trip down the memory lane, Runa Laila can still remember her birthdays were spent wearing the dresses stitched by her mother and elder sister Dina Laila. Like the gifts she received on  Eid days, she used to get new dresses from her mother and sister on her birthdays. But these days, when her birthday arrives, she misses her childhood days a lot.

Runa Laila becomes emotional every time, when the subject of her birthday comes. She said about her birthday, “All my childhood birthdays were memorable. My friends were used to come to my house, birthday cakes were cut—overall, we always enjoyed to the fullest. Nowadays, it doesn’t happen anymore. I am grateful to the Most Merciful Allah that I am still in good health, fine and can sing in a well manner till today. Now, we the family members celebrate the birthday in our own way. Usually, we do not go out on this day.”
“But when my birthday arrives, I miss my mother a lot as my mother’s birthday is on December 1. I also miss my eldest granddaughter, her birthday is on November 24.”
Runa Laila last year celebrated her birthday with her granddaughter in London.
Besides her mother’s contribution to her today’s position, Runa Laila also especially mentioned about the support of her father and sister, Dina Laila. Even she never forgets to mention about her fans and audience for her success in life.
Runa Laila has received the National Film Award for six times for her unique playback in the films. Her first award came in 1977 for lending her vocal to the film ‘Jadur Bashi’ directed by Abdul Latif Bacchu.
Later, she received the same prestigious award at different times for the films, namely ‘Accident’, ‘Ontore Ontore’, Tumi Asbe’, ‘Devdas’ and ‘Priya Tumi Sukhi Hou’.
Till now, Runa Laila lent her vocal to more than ten thousand songs. She can sing in 18 languages—which is really a rare quality of a singer in the world’s music scene.
