A Pirojpur freedom fighter succumbed to injuries early Tuesday after being beaten mercilessly allegedly by a union parisad (UP) member and his accomplice.
The freedom fighter was identified as Abdus Salam Khan, 62, of Shialkathi village under Bhandaria upazila in the district. He was a retired teacher of a primary school. Recently, he had established a kindergarten in his locality.
Police took the body to a local hospital for an autopsy while his family was preparing for a namaj-e-janaza for the deceased on Tuesday.
According to sources, Khan was attacked at neighboring Saturia village under Rajapur upazila in Jhalakathi district on Monday evening. At that time, he was visiting the house of a teacher of the kindergarten he established.
On Monday afternoon, local UP member Mostafizur Rahman Bacchu and his accomplice allegedly called out Khan from the teacher’s house and beaten him mercilessly. Later, the duo admitted the freedom fighter to Bhandaria hospital under a fake name.
UNB adds: A man was killed and 10 others were injured in a factional clash of the ruling Awami League over establishing supremacy at Balipara in Trishal upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Saiful Molla, 40.
Golam Mohammad Badal, Balipara union parishad chairman and president of union unit Awami League, had long standing enmity with Abdul Bari, a convener of union unit Jubo League, over establishing dominance in the union, said Maniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Trishal Police Station.
