In a fresh incident of arson attack, miscreants torched the cowshed of Nasirnagar upazila vice-chairman Anjan Kummar Dey in the upazila headquarters yesterday evening, reports UNB.
Anjan told the news agency that a group of miscreants set fire to the cowshed of his house around 6:30 pm when he was away from home.
Noticing the leaping flame, neighbours rushed in and doused it, he said.
However, there were no cattle in the cowshed during the arson attack and no one was also injured in the incident either.
On information, upazila parishad chairman ATM Moniruzzaman Sarkar, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) M Liakat Ali and officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar Police Station M Abu Jafar visited the spot.
Earlier, police on Tuesday night arrested a BNP leader for his alleged involvement in recent attacks on the Hindu community in Nasirnagar upazila.
The arrestee was identified as Amirul Hossain Chakder, president of Nasirnagar sadar union unit of BNP.
Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in Nasirnagar Bazar area and arrested Amirul at night, said officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar Police Station Abu Jafar.
A total of 85 people have so far been arrested in connection with the attacks on the Hindu community.
On October 30, an unruly mob equipped with sharp weapons went berserk and demolished a number of Hindu temples and nearly 100 houses in Nasirnagar upazila following a rumour of a Facebook post demeaning the Holy Kaaba.
Meanwhile, BNP standing committee member Dr Khandker
Mosharraf Hossain yesterday alleged that the government is arresting BNP leaders in connection with the attacks on the Hindu community in Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria to ‘shift the blame’ onto others.
“A union unit BNP president was arrested last night (Tuesday night) over the attacks that took place following a conflict between a minister and a local MP over establishing supremacy in Brahmanbaria only to put the blame on others,” he said while addressing a discussion in the city.
BNP arranged the discussion at the Jatiya Press Club as part of its two-day programme marking the 40th death anniversary of Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, who died on November 17 in 1976.
Claiming that the government is carrying out incidents one after another, Mosharraf said it is repressing BNP leaders and activists putting the blame on the country’s most popular party.
He said the government now wants to gag the opposition voice implicating its leaders and activists in cases not only over Nasirnagar attacks but also other attacks that took place recently.
The BNP leader also criticised Awami League for not observing the death anniversary of its founder Moulana Bhasani.
Presided over by BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, the discussion was addressed, among others, by BNP chairperson’s advisers Ataur Rahman Dali and Nazmul Haque Nannu and BNP joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokan.
