The Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee (SCLAC) yesterday wrote to jail authorities across the country, seeking information on prisoners who have been languishing in jail for a long time without trial.
The SCLAC, led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim, has asked the jail authorities to prepare lists of such prisoners who have been in jail for more than five years and 10 years separately and send them to the committee so that it could provide them free legal assistance.
The SCLAC directive came after recent media reports that many poor prisoners were lodged behind bars for years without any trial. The trial proceedings of the cases against these prisoners could not be finished due to different reasons, including absence of witnesses in the trial courts, according to the letter.
In another letter, the SCLAC requested the Islamic Foundation to instruct the khatibs and imams of all mosques in the country to inform their congregations about the committee’s activities so that poor people could appear before it to seek legal assistance.
