Just before this year’s HSC and A-Level results were out, Y&I talked with some students who took part in the examinations. They talked about their first choices concerning higher education and how they are preparing themselves for university life. Since then, four months have passed and this week, Y&I revisited some of those students to talk about their results and future plans.

I got GPA (grade point average) 3.42 in the HSC exams. I had initially planned to take admission in a private university, but things didn’t work out that way. It turns out the cost of education in private universities is not as cheap. It is three times more expensive than what my family and I thought it would be. Now, I have applied for admission to the National University and am waiting for their response. I really wanted to study journalism in a private university, but the reality is I cannot afford it. Keeping the practical situation in mind, I am also trying to get a job. If I can get some work, then I might find a way to afford studying at a private university.

Things do not always go as you plan, but it’s a bad idea if you stop planning completely. Lucky for me, my plan to go to the USA and study there is working out well. I got GPA 5 in the HSC and scored 8 in the IELTS exams. Next year, I will take the ACT exams and meanwhile, I am studying really hard. In the beginning, my family didn’t support my idea of going abroad. But later they understood that I am right and in the US there are better scholarship opportunities. I am a student from science group and I would like to study any science related subject.

I got GPA 5 in the HSC exams. Before the results, I mentioned that I wanted to study Physics in USA and my plan has not changed. Some may think that studying in America will cost more, which I don’t really believe. I think if you look at the cost of living here, plus studying in a well-known private university, it would cost nearly the same as in the US. Rather, there are more scholarship opportunities there. The most important thing they look at before giving you a student visa is the level of your proficiency in English. I am going to take part in the ACT exams next year and I am taking preparations at home. I didn’t go to any coaching centres because I found help for my ACT exams online, completely free of charge. In particular, I found the online free education organisation Khan Academy to be extremely helpful.

I am happy with my HSC results as I got GPA 4.67. Before the results were out, I said I wanted to study at BRAC University, but things are not heading the way I wished. I am from Chittagong and I went to BRAC University with one of my uncles, and it turns out that it will cost us nearly twice than what we originally thought it would. Now, my parents want me to stay in Chittagong and try for some of the private universities there. I didn’t apply to BUET because I didn’t have the points, but I am trying at other public universities.
