Convicted Badi gets HC bail

Convicted Badi gets HC bail
Abdur Rahman Badi

The High Court yesterday granted bail for six months to ruling Awami League lawmaker from Cox’s Bazar Abdur Rahman Badi, who was jailed for three years in a graft case by a trial court.

The HC also stayed the Tk 10 lakh fined imposed on him by the trial court in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for hiding information about his wealth.
After hearing a bail petition filed by Badi, the bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus granted his bail just two weeks after his conviction for ‘concealing and providing false’ wealth statement to the ACC.
Badi filed the appeal challenging the lower court verdict on Tuesday (Nov 15), 13 days after a Dhaka court had sentenced him to three years in jail and fined Tk 10 lakh for hiding information about his wealth to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Badi would have to serve another three months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.
Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of the special judge’s court of Dhaka had delivered the verdict in the presence of Badi setting the first instance of conviction of an incumbent lawmaker for graft.

The court, however, acquitted Badi of the charge of amassing wealth illegally.
After the HC bail yesterday, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told reporters that the ACC would file an appeal with the HC against the trial court order that had acquitted Badi from charge of amassing wealth illegally.
The ACC filed the case with Ramna police station in Dhaka on August 21, 2014, accusing the legislator of amassing wealth illegally and concealing information in his wealth statement.
Badi was arrested and put in jail for three weeks in October 2014. He later secured bail from the High Court.
On May 7 last year, the ACC’s investigating officer, deputy director Manjil Morshed, submitted the charge-sheet against Badi in the court. The charge-sheet said Badi had accumulated more than Tk. 6.3 crore disproportionate to the known sources of his income, and that he had concealed information from the ACC about assets worth more than Tk. 3.9 crore.
On September 8 last year, the court framed charges against Badi and started the trial on October 6.
