Gazipur: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader warned that the responsible officials and contractors will have to pay dearly if Eid holidaymakers suffer for any bad road condition, reports UNB.
“The road condition across the country is now better than anytime in the past. If the homebound passengers suffer for any road on the occasion of Eid, the officials, engineers and contactors concerned will he held responsible for it and stern action will be taken against them,” he said.
The minister issued the warning yesterday while talking to reporters at Chandra Crossing in Kaliakoir upazila after visiting Dhaka-Tangail highway and Kaliakoir-Nabinagar road.
Obaidul Quader said they are carrying out road development and repairing works not only before Eid to facilitate the smooth journey for the commuters, but also round the year.
He said the construction work on Gazipur-Joydbpur and Tangail Elenga four-lane project will start in September next. The tender process for the project has already been completed and the work order issued.
Quader said they cannot upgrade the Nabinagar-Baipail-Uttara road to four-lane ones due to various problems relating to land acquisition as there are some establishments like mosques, madrassah and dwelling houses beside the road. He said they are now thinking of constructing a 22-km elevated expressway over there.
Writer and columnist Syed Abul Maksud and Road and Highways Department officials were present.
