Residents of the city in a human chain yesterday morning demanded better health services in public sector by upgrading Barisal Sher-e- Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMC) to post-graduation level and Barisal General (Sadar) Hospital to 250-bed college level institution.
The programme was organised by ‘Committee for preserving Barisal Sadar Hospital and developing public health services’. Kajal Ghosh, convener of the committee, presided over the programme.
Leaders and activists of ruling and opposition political parties, professional-socio-cultural-development organisations, students, teachers and a cross section of people participated in the programme held in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall of the city. The programme, addressed among others by district BNP leader Ebaidul Huq Chan, district AL leader Syed Anis , Mohsin Ul Islam Habul of JP, AK Azad of CPB, Abdul Hye Mahbub of JSD, Nazrul Huq Nilu of Workers Party, Dr. Mizanur Rahman of Barisal Bivag Unyon Committee, M G Kabir Vulu, Nurul Alam Farid of Muktijoddha Sangsad, Faridul Alam of Shikkhak Samity, Shanti Das of Sangskritik Sangothan Samanya Parishad, Dr Habibur Rahman of Human Rights Association, Kohinur Begum, councilor of BCC, Rahima Sultana Kajal of development organisation activists.
The speakers told the human chain programme that government already announced plan to upgrade old public medical colleges to post-graduation level and so Barisal SBMCH should be given priority it that case.
Besides more than hundred years old 100-bed Barisal General (Sadar) Hospital should be upgraded to 250-bed and must be under supervision of SBMCH authourities instead of district civil surgeon for upgrading it to a medical college and expanding standard public sector health services, the speakers told the meeting.
After the human chain a memorandum to prime minister, health minister, and health directorate have been submitted through the deputy commissioner of Barisal.
