Students of Dania University College yesterday barricaded the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in front of the college at Shanir Akhra demanding construction of a foot over bridge causing sufferings to the commuters and school children.
Several hundred students of the college took to the street at about 10:00am and blockaded all types of vehicles causing immense difficulty to the office goers, school goers and others for about one and half an hours.
Speaking the gathering on the highway, the students claimed that they applied for construction of a foot over bridge in front of the college in 2009 but the Dhaka South City Corporation did not meet their demand yet.
They alleged that a delegation led by Mahbub Alam, a political science student, met DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokan on October 31 and gave a timeline to give them assurance of construction of the foot over bridge but the authority failed to make any commitment to them.
“That’st hey took to the streets to materialise their demand, said Zahid Hasan, a first year student of the college.
In the meantime, at least one college student was killed and many others were injured while crossing the highway. That’s why the students took to the streets to meet the demand immediately, said another student Shafiqul.
