“During monsoon months I often miss classes because of the sako,” said Shahadat, a student of class two of Gilatala Government Primary School in Kalapara, using the local word ‘sako’ for the bamboo bridge over Londa canal that many students and villagers rely on for their daily commute.

“In rainy season especially I am afraid,” said class ten student Farzana Akhter. She studies in Londa Dakhil Madrasah and also relies on the bamboo bridge.
She said students have to face untold sufferings to attend classes when they use the bamboo bridge or boat crossing Londa canal.
Local people, mostly students of three educational institutions in Dhankhali union of  Kalapara upazila, are crossing a bamboo bridge on the canal amid risk of accidents due to lack of an iron bridge on it. The institutions are Purba Londa Government Primary School, Gilatala Government Primary School and Londa Dakhil Madrasah.
People of Chailabunia, Dhankhali, Gilatala, Londa and Modhya Londa villages have little choice but to brave the bamboo bridge as the most practical way to cross the canal.
To facilitate movement students and teachers built the bamboo bridge with village-raised funds.
The attendance of students in the schools and madrasah is being decreased during the rainy season as the situation worsened further this time.
To mitigate people’s sufferings, immediate steps will be taken to build an iron bridge on the canal, said Abdul Motaleb Talukder, chairman of Kalapara Upazila Parishad.
