RANGPUR: The local government institutions should adopt time-befitting development plans and implement those efficiently to ensure their contribution in the process of achieving the set sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The opinion came at a workshop titled ‘Sustainable development goals, role and contribution of the local government institutions in achieving those’ organised by the district administration at conference room of the deputy commissioner yesterday, reports BSS.The Local Government Division extended cooperation in arranging the event under the Union Parishad Governance Project (UPGP) with financial support of European Union (EU), Danida, United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and UNDP. Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed attended the workshop as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar in the chair. Assistant Country Director of UNDP Bangladesh Shaila Khan and Divisional Director of the Local Government Mohd Mominur Rahman addressed the workshop as special guests.
Project Manager of the UPGP Oliullah delivered presentation on “Coordination of the SDGs with activities and planning of union parisahd’ to ensure sustainability of the development works for achieving the SDGs.
Programme Analyst of UNDP Bangladesh Saidur Rahman Mollah discussed on the 17 goals and 169 targets of the SDGs and ways for coordinating those with adoption of planning and formulating effective development budgets by union parishads.District Facilitator of the UPGP Mahbubul Alam facilitated group works on preparing and adoption of planning and formulation of budgets as per local demand by union parishads to attain the set goals and targets of the SDGs.
The chief guest narrated about the tremendous successes already attained through achieving the millennium development goals (MDGs) by 2015 last in raising the status of the country to lower middle income nation.
“The local government institutions should adopt all development plans and implement those ensuring sustainability to attain the SDGs in the process of building a middle income Bangladesh by 2021 and developed nation by 2041,” he said.
