BNP demonstration falls flat

STAFF REPORTER

The countrywide demonstration programme called by the BNP for yesterday was largely ignored as party leaders and activists did not respond to the call, fearing arrests by police. Nevertheless, sudden processions were brought out in some areas of several districts, including Gazipur.
On Sunday, the BNP had announced the programme of demonstrations at district, thana and upazila levels to protest against the administration’s decision to deny the party permission to hold its ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.
No party leader and activist organised any demonstration anywhere in the city.
Yunus Mridha, Khilgaon thana president of the BNP, claimed that the party brought out sudden processions in some thana areas in the city, including Khilgaon, Shahbagh, Jatrabari, Kalabagan, Kamrangirchar and Kadamtoli.
He also claimed that at least seven party activists—three in Shampur and four in Kadamtoli—were arrested when they tried to bring out processions.
When asked why their processions in Dhaka could not be seen by citizens, Mridha said the processions lasted for three to five minutes. He also said the Khilgaon BNP brought out a procession from Pallima Sangsad to Khidma Hospital.
The city BNP did not issue any press release about the programme till the filing of this report.
The Gazipur municipal BNP brought out a procession, led by Hannan Miah Hannu. It started from Shibbari and ended at the bus stand after marching down different roads.
Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday called upon the government to hold fresh elections in consultation with all political parties before facing any mass outrage.
“The extent of heinous crimes taking place all over the country may lead to mass outrage. So, we call upon the government to hold the next election in discussion with all political parties before it happens,” he said.
Fakhrul was speaking at a meeting organised by the Jatiyatabadi Sechchashebok Dal at the Institution of Engineers.
The meeting demanded immediate release of party joint secretary general Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel.
Shafiul Bari Babu, president of the organisation, presided over the meeting.
