ACC launches probe against PDBF MD

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started primary investigation into allegations of corruption brought against Palli Daridra Bimochon Foundation (PDBF) managing director (MD) Mahbubur Rahman alias Kalam. A team of the ACC, led by its deputy director Mejbah Uddin, quizzed the PDBF chief at his Mirpur office.
“A lot of allegations has been levelled against Mahbubur Rahman. He was allegedly appointed managing director of the PDBF by violating the organisation's law and service rules. The ACC has started investigating these allegations,” Mejbah Uddin, also investigating officer of the case, told The Independent.
The ACC has started investigating these allegations from November 9. Initially, the ACC team has asked Mahbubur Rahman to produce some papers and documents to them.
“We've sought relevant and necessary documents to complete the investigation. We've also asked Mahbubur to produce his wealth statement and papers of expenditure," said Mejbah Uddin.
“The ACC is probing the allegations brought against Mahbubur,” he added.
If any anomaly is found, the ACC official said that “the law will take its own course”.
According to PDBF sources, the new MD and his close aides, who have been working in different positions, including the post of director, at the PDBF headquarters in Mirpur, have allegedly been involved in irregularities and corruption.
The allegations include embezzlement of funds allocated by the government in the name of giving micro-credit to people residing in areas prone to river erosion and taking illegal benefits from job-seekers by using the name of the managing director's office.
There have also been allegations that Mahbubur is forcing PDBF employees to do his household chores and using three PDBF cars for personal benefit.
Owing to such allegations, the PDBF governing board is yet to legalise Mahbubur's appointment as managing director. As a result, there is no gazette notification regarding his appointment.
