When the other batsmen were thoroughly suffocated by the quality bowling attack of South Africa, only Soumya Sarkar found some aggression to fight them with shoulder to shoulder. He took the spirited South African bowler with utter derision from the words go and gave the side a whirlwind start. Bangladesh aimed to score at least 40 to 50 runs in the first six overs, the first powerplay of the game.
Courtesy to Soumya Sarkar they easily could touch the destiny. Soumya’s effortless batting put the shed on Tamim Iqbal, arguably a more attacking and illustrious batsman than Soumya but the swashbuckling opener struggled to dominate the South African bowlers. What made Soumya comfortable about dealing the Proteas bowlers was his flexibility which gave him the time to go front foot and back foot in a flash of moment. Therefore it was easy for him to counter the bouncer and short deliveries of the fast bowlers.
Tamim however eventually fell, trying to force a shot. Tamim’s dismissal put an adverse impact on Soumya as he lost the concentration. He finally misread a flighted delivery of debutant leg-spinner Eddie Leie and led to his downfall. His 21 ball-37 was designed with six fours and a six.
