Three suffer burn injuries
Three female domestic helps sustained burn injuries in a gas explosion at an apartment in the capital’s Gulshan area yesterday morning.
The injured are: Parvin, 37, Bedena, 20, and Sharifa, 18. Sub-inspector Bacchu Miah, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) police camp, said a gas stove exploded when one of them was trying to lit the stove for making breakfast in the flat of ‘Navana Tower’ in the area around 6.30am, leaving trio burn-injured.
Later, locals whisked them off to DMCH. Parvin is ailing with 20 percent burn injuries while Bedana and Sharifa with 90 and 100 percent respectively.
Suspended mayor Ariful gets bail
The High Court on Sunday granted bail to suspended Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in the former finance minister Kibria murder case.
An HC bench comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order following a petition filed by Ariful. Barrister Mainul Hossain stood for Ariful while deputy attorney general Mohamamd Bashirullah represented the state. Five people, including Kibria, were killed and 70 others injured in a grenade attack on a public rally of local Awami League at Baidder Bazar in Sadar upazila of Habiganj district on January 27, 2005.
Four held with arms, ammo
Detective Branch (DB) of police on Sunday night arrested four persons along with seven arms and 15 round of bullet and eight magazines from the capital’s Mugda area.
The arrestees are: Shahar Ali alias Liton alias Banga Liton, 27, Mohammad Ferdous alias Fedu, 29, Humayun Kabir alias Jhanu, 43 and Mohammad Manik, 28, DB sources said.
BNP procession postponed
Police postponed rally of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the city yesterday.
Following the scheduled of central committee district and city unit BNP jointly staged demonstration in front of their office on Ashwini Kumar town hall premises with Moniruzaman Faruk in the chair. When they tried to bring out a procession at about 11:30am police stopped the procession.
Media training workshop from Dec 18
Inter Press Service IPS (www.ipsnews.net), the international news agency, will host a two-day long media training workshop with the support from the United Nations Foundation for Dhaka-based young journalists on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The programme is schedule to be held on 18-19 December at CIRDAP, Dhaka, says a press release.
This workshop is one in a series of four being organized by IPS to discuss and analyse the implications and the feasibility of the UN’s development plans – and, more importantly, the obstacles facing both the UN and the international community in reaching these highly ambitious goals.
