N’ganj city polls Dec 22: CEC

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday announced the schedule for the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls with December 22 set as the polling date. 

The chief election commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the schedule at the media centre of the EC secretariat in the capital. 
The last date for submission of nomination is November 24 while the dates to scrutinise the nominations would be on November 26 and 27. The last date of withdrawal of nominations is December 4, the CEC said. 
This would be the second polls in the Narayanganj City Corporation, but the election this time would be held, for the first time, under party banner. 
EC’s Deputy Secretary Nuruzzaman Talukder would act as the returning officer of the NCC polls. The NCC election would be held under 27 general posts and nine reserved seats for women.
UNB adds: A total of 4,79,392 voters --2,41,514 men and 2,37,878 women-are expected to exercise their franchise in the polls to elect a city mayor, 27 ward councillors and nine women councillors from reserved seats. The city corporation is comprised of 27 wards under two upazilas --Sadar and Bandar-- and four police stations - Narayanganj, Bandar, Sidwirganj and Fatulla. 
If anyone gets aggrieved with the decision of the returning officer during the scrutiny of the nomination paper, s/he can file a petition with the appeal authority (Dhaka Divisional Commissioner), challenging the decision from November 28 to 30. 
And the appeal authority will have to dispose of the petition from December 1 to 3.
