5 cops among 7 killed in road crash

Seven people, including five policemen, were killed and five others were injured in a head-on collision between a police van and a truck at Mahipur Bazar on Dhaka-Bogra Highway in Sherpur upazila early yesterday.
The deceased were identified as policemen Shahjahan, 35, Pranab, 32, Alamgir, 33, Shamsul, 30, Sohel, 32, and a sweeper named Shymol, 42. Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Moynul Islam, Constable Abu Taher and three others were injured in the accident. All the policemen were posted in Kurigram police line.
Officer-in-charge of Sherpur Police Station Khan M Erfan said nine policemen of Kurigram Police Lines were going to the Police Head­quarters in Dhaka by the van at night. When it reached Mahipur Bazar, the vehicle collided with a fertilizer-laden truck around 2am, leaving the six people including four police personnel dead on the spot and six others injured. On information police and Fire Service and Civil Defense members were rushed to the spot and rescued the injured and the dead and sent them to Sherpur Upazila Health Complex and Shaheed Ziaur  Rahman Medical College Hospital where another policeman succumbed to injuries.
