The BNP has announced a series of countrywide demonstrations today to protest against the administration’s decision to deny the party permission to hold its ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ rally at Suhrawardy Udyan. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday announced the programme at a press conference at the party's central office at Naya Paltan in the city. As part of the programme, the party would stage demonstrations at the thana level in cities, including Dhaka, and also at district and upazila levels across the country. In Dhaka, party leaders and activists will stage demonstrations at every thana of the city. Fakhrul criticised the government for not giving permission to the BNP to hold its programme. He termed the police permission to hold an indoor meeting at the Institution of Engineers around an hour before the meeting as an obscene joke. “The government doesn't want to give us permission to hold the rally as it's afraid of our programme,” he added. The BNP leader said people could easily understand the sorry state of democracy under the Awami League-led government when a party which had been in power for five times was not allowed to hold a public meeting.
The BNP had sought police permission to hold its planned rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 7 or 8. The police, however, did not give the permission for the programme. Later, the BNP wanted to hold the rally in front of its central office on November 8, but the police gave permission to the party for holding an indoor meeting at the Institution of Engineers on that day on 27 conditions. The police permission came about one hour ahead of the meeting it set for the BNP. BNP leaders rejected the police permission to hold the indoor meeting, saying that they wanted to hold an outdoor rally.
Earlier, the BNP secretary general had announced a fresh date to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 13. The police denied the BNP permission to hold its rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Sunday as well. Party leaders alleged that they wanted to talk to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner regarding the matter, but he did not give them any appointment.
