The authorities of Barisal Government BM College allegedly cut down many trees in the name of development, extension and beautification of the campus.
While visiting the site this correspondent found that many Mehgoni and Eucalyptus trees planted on the side of inner roads from zero point to degree hostel on the campus already cut down by direction of college authority. Students said they found that trees in front of degree academic building cutting down by the labours.
Labours said they started work from Friday and already 6/7 trees were cut by order of the principal. Prof SM Imanul Hakim, principal of the college, said we ordered to cut only some Eucalyptus for development, extension and beautification of campus.
The branches of some Mahogany trees were also cut down as those endangering the campus roadside and damaging building. ‘Development would never be possible without cutting trees ‘, the principal added. Abu Naser Khan, forest officer of Barisal coastal range, said cutting trees and its branches need prior approval and permission from forest department.
B M College authorities yet not applied or permitted for that and he will investigate the matter, the CFO told.
