Let us combat diabetes

World Diabetes Day falls every year on November 14 and it is a day when millions of people around the world come together to raise awareness of diabetes. It’s a global campaign, led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), with activity taking place around the world. The IDF fixed ‘Eyes on Diabetes’ as the theme of this year’s World Diabetes Day. The day is aimed at promoting the importance of screening to ensure early disgnosis of type 2 diabetes and treatment to reduce the risk of serious complications. If the disease is not screened and brought under treatment initially, there is a risk of losing eye power.
Though the World Diabetes Day is observed across the world on Novemever 14, World Health Organization (WHO) decided to make diabetes as the theme of this year’s World Health Day to raise awareness about the disease. It indicates that how much importrance has been attached to diabetes in the world. It may be mentioned here that the theme of this year’s World Health Day was ‘Stay Super-beat Diabetes’. WHO observed the day on April 7 this year by calling for action on diabetes. There are three reasons for selecting diabetes as the theme of the World Health Day.

1. To raise awareness about the intensity of the disease in lower and middle income countries and disease burden on human being and its consequences.

2.  To chalk out specific, effective and cost-effectve ways  for facing the challenge of diabetes, which will be effective for prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care.

3. To present the first global report on diabetes, informing people of the disease burden and its consequences. It will ensure watch on improving health style, improve disease preventive system and build effective management for diabetes.
IDF and WHO in 1991 decided to observe November 14 as the World Diabetes Day as the intensity of diabetes increased world wide.
IDF has estimated that globally as many as 193 million people, or close to half of all adults living with diabetes in 2015, are unaware of their disease.
“Diabetes is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower-limb amputation. Over one third of all people currently living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes will develop some form of damage to their eyes that can lead to blindness. These complications can be prevented or delayed by maintaining blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels as close to normal as possible. Many complications can be picked up in their early stages through screening, so that treatment can be given to prevent them becoming more serious”, said IDF, adding that screening is very important, risk increases more if the disease is undetected.
In Bangladesh, there are about 90 lakh diabetes patients and one lakh more is being added to the list every year.
Health experts apprehended that the number of diabetes affected people will cross 55 crore in the world by the year 2030 if effective steps are not taken now for preventing the disease. They say that a patient can control the disease if they lead disciplined life. People of all ages are now being affected by the disease due to lack of awareness. Bangladesh’s position is the 10th in the world in terms of infection of the disease.
Adoption of healthy life style has been emphasized for controlling diabetes in the world. Healthy life style means making healthy food habit, exerchise and keeping our mind healthy. If we want to keep our mind healthy, pressure on mind  should be avoived. Both physical and mental pressures are harmful for health. Most of the people think that they face pressure while doing services, jobs and maintaining families. These are called stress.
Real pressure are emanating from our surrounding environment, air pollution, foods we take and electro-magnetic rays coming from TV set, computer or other electronic machineries. There are other pressures we face in our day to day life. Doing yoga, meditation and taking long breath are beneficial for reducing the pressures.
Holistic system (wonderful combination of modern technology and ancient natural system) is being popular day by day in the world for prevention of diabetes and its control. There are two key elements in this system. One is making healthy food habit and another is exerchise. Daily intake of foods depends on patient’s age, type of disease and their present condition. Intake of nutritious foods and moderation in eating keep people fit. There are diffefent matters regarding exerchise. Before that, it is needed to do meditation in proper way for controlling our mind. Mental pressure is the root cause of diseases and unrest. It is very important to reduce the mental pressure.
Holistic system has been playing a significant role in our country in the last one decade, bringing good news to a large number of diabetes and cardiovascular patients. It has not only reduced the risk of diabetes but also brought relief to the lives of long time diabetes patients.
Many patients are now leading good life by decreasing the amount of insulin. Holistic system of treatment is acting as helpful friend for daibetes patients in Bangladesh.
On the occasion of the World Diabetes Day, we expect that proper initiave will be taken regarding research and awareness on the holistic system in order to combat diseases such as diabetes for the benefit of our people.
