A writ petition was filed with the High Court yesterday challenging the legality of Kazi Reazul Hoque’s appointment as the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the petition with the related branch of the High Court praying the court asks Reazul to explain under what authority he has been holding the office as the commission chairman.
The petitioner also claimed that Reazul was appointed to the office in violation of the relevant provision of the National Human Rights Commission Act 2007.
According to section 6 (3) of the Act, a person cannot be appointed as member of the commission for more than two terms.
Kazi Reazul was earlier appointed twice as a member of the NHRC, the petitioner said, adding that a chairman of the NHRC is also a member of the rights body.
Later, Akond told reporters that as pre the provision, a legal expert is supposed to be the chairman of the commission. But Reazul is not a legal expert.
