Trump win

BNP leaders see no change in US policy

STAFF REPORTER
BNP leaders see no change in US policy

BNP leaders think that the victory of Republican Donald Trump in the US presidential election would not change America's position on Bangladesh affairs and its national polls.

They observed that the change in government in the USA would not reflect on its foreign policy, as it believes in democracy, human rights and rule of law.
The leaders called upon the Bangladesh government to take a lesson from the US election in holding free and fair polls.  They expect that Bangladeshis living in the USA would be allowed to work smoothly, as it was in the past.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir greeted Trump for being elected as the 45th US president and hoped that he would go forward to ensure global peace and restore democracy and human rights in other countries.
“We think the US people believe in a democratic system and the new president will work to ensure democracy in other countries,” said a senior BNP leader. He expressed hope that Trump would help in the economic development of Bangladesh and have a soft corner for Bangladeshis living in the USA.

Some BNP leaders, who were expecting a Hillary victory, said the party would have gained extra mileage had she won. They, however, said Bangladesh’s internal problems should be solved by its own people, its government and opposition parties.
BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy said it is too early to comment on the victory of Trump. “Let him take charge first. Only then, those running the country will think about the positive and negative aspects of Trump's victory. We, too, will consider the fallout,” he added.
Goyeshwar, however, said he is happy that the USA is continuing with the democratic process and electing its president through free and fair polls. He congratulated the American people for electing their president through ballots and Trump for his victory.
He also said the BNP wants Bangladesh to be an example in the democratic world.
The BNP leader called upon the Prime Minister to evaluate the US poll with an open mind and take steps to hold free and fair elections. “She (PM) should consider that her candidate of choice, Trump, has not been elected president by force,” he added.
Another standing committee member, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, said he thinks that the US poll result would have no impact on the political relations between the two countries. He also said the government should take a lesson from the US poll and take steps to restore democratic atmosphere and rule of the law in the country.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed called upon Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to learn from the American election and said nothing happened there by force. “The Democrats are in power, but the Republican candidate won. No force was used and the election reflected public opinion,” he added.
BNP joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said they hoped that the US stand on democracy and human rights would remain unchanged. He, however, apprehended that expatriates might face problems.
The BNP rank and file was hoping for a Democrat victory. Many of them think that they would have benefited politically had Hillary won. The USA and India are considered important in Bangladesh politics.
