Rubbishing all calculations of political pundits, media pollsters and digital data analysts, Donald Trump almost single -handedly stunned the world by clinching an unprecedented, and dramatic victory.
The way Trump pulled off a stunning upset over Hillary Clinton and win the presidency showed that the political high-ups and the top media houses in the USA and across the world failed to capture the boiling anger of a large portion of the American electorate that feels left behind by the establishment.
It also triggered questions about the ability of the US political elites and media to understand the pulse of the American people.
Even when the vote-count began here yesterday evening, his probability to win the election was shown at only 7 per cent compared to Hillary’s 83 per cent by top media polls, prompting the democratic supporters to get ready for the celebration party. But with the ticking of clocks things started turning bizarre for Clinton Camp as Trump was found to take control of all the battle-ground states. A soul searching began in the American newsrooms with everybody admitting that with all the dazzling technology, the big data and the sophisticated modeling they had missed what was happening all around it and that the numbers weren’t just a poor guide for election night.
Political and media thought Trump supporters who were dreaming to win as being out of touch with reality but in the end, it was the other way around.
The week-long trend before the poll showed that for Hillary, it was an easy mathematics, she had to win one of the 5 swing states to achieve the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the presidency and for Trump it was almost impossible as he had to win in all those. Because Hillary had the advantage of having a higher number of votes than Trump in rest of the 50 states. But at the end of the day Trump made the impossible task possible and Clinton failed to accomplish the easy task. The 5 swing states -Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan-all were grabbed by Trump though the race was too tight. In Florida and Pennsylvania Trump won by only 1 per cent. If he lost any of these one, Clinton could be the first female president of the United States.
Interestingly when counting began Hillary took an early lead in 4 of these 5 states except Michigan. In Pennsylvania which has 20 electoral college votes and where Clinton focused heavily, she took the lead up to the counting of 60 per cent votes. At one stage there was a tie but finally she lost by one per cent margin. The same happened in the sunshine state Florida which holds 29 electoral college votes. She lost the crucial state by one per cent also. Florida alone could send the former secretary of state to the White House given the present outcome. Finally Michigan which was considered a strong bastion for democrats went in favour of Trump and this is since 1998 that a Democrat candidate lost the state.
Deserted by the political elites of his own party and media as a whole, the way Trump won the presidency forced all to review his campaign strategy from the beginning. Now everybody is admitting his attempt to project himself as a protector of the working class proved correct. His bid to establish himself as a neo-icon of American nationalism who would turn America great again paid the dividend and his constant attack against ruling elites in Washington and against financial lords in Wall Street got the working class especially the whites motivated to come out of home and to vote for him. At the end of the day, he proved to be a perfect dream-merchant who throughout his campaign sold dreams - for change and for better employment opportunity to the aggrieved working class.
And remember his closing sentence in his last campaign rally at the early hours of Tuesday. ‘Today, the American working class will strike back. Indeed they did.
