Two persons were jailed for life in separate drug peddling cases in Benapole.
A court here on Tuesday convicted an Indian national and sentenced him to life imprisonment for drug peddling.
The convict is Saul Hamid, hailing from Tamil Nadu in India.
The court also fined him Tk one lakh; in default, to suffer six more months’ imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, a team of police arrested Hamid along with 2.5 kg cocaine from a bus on Jessore-Benapole road in Jhikargachha upazila on January 7, 2010. A case was filed with Jhikargachha Police Station against him under the Narcotics Control Act.
After examining the records and witnesses, Judge Monjurul Imam of the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-1 handed down the verdict.
Meanwhile, a court on the same day sentenced a man to life imprisonment for drug peddling.
The convict is Taijul Islam, 38, a resident of Shyamalgachhi village in Sharsha upazila.
According to the prosecution, a team of police arrested Taijul along with 50 grams of heroin from Benapole-Jessore road on April 11, 2009.
Later, a case was filed against him in this connection.
After examining the records and witnesses, Judge Mohammad Samsul Haque of the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-2 handed down the verdict.
