Malta farming gaining popularity in Narsingdi

DAE officials encouraged farmers for cultivation malta as the climate and soil of the district are suitable for the fruit

NARSINGDI: Commercial farming of BARI Malta-1, a Maltese variant of orange and a new devised of Horticulture Research Centre of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, has gained popularity among the people in the district, reports BSS.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said BARI Malta-1, a popular citrus fruit, is an extra-ordinary produced and Horticulture Research Centre of BARI first introduced it in 2003.
Deputy Director of DAE Lotafat Hossain said after getting successful result in experimental basis, a number of farmers specially educated youths in Shibpur and Belabo upazilas of the district have started farming of BARI Malta-1 in their homestead garden and others high fallow lands from 2011 and at present they are getting good yield of the fruit.
He also said DAE offices encouraged the farmers and also given them training for cultivation more BARI Malta-1 as the climate and soil of the district are suitable for the fruit.
The DAE office, in the meantime, distributed over 15,000 high yielding and highbred plants of BARI Malta-1 to the farmers of the district collected from Joyanta of Sylhet Agriculture Research Centre.
The deputy director said farming of BARI Malta-1 is more profitable than other fruits. The fruit is a delicious and nutritious and contains huge vitamin-c. Farmers during the last six years raised a number of orchards in all the six upazilas of the district.
Some 200 saplings can be planted on per bigha of land. The tree starts flowering within two years of plantation (Grafting process) and after flowering malta can be harvesting within three month. Each tree bears 150 to 200 malta in a year.
Jahangir Alam, resident of Sayednagor village in Shibpur upazila, said he started BARI Malta-1 cultivation on 30 decimals lands in 2011. He raised garden by planting 200 saplings and the plants growing well. This year he got an excellent result from his garden.
The DD also said BARI Malta cultivation is gaining popularity in the district due to the economic prospect of the fruit, He hopes BARI Malta -1 business will create huge economic activities and job for the people of the district.
