Bangladesh has ranked 57th globally over the health warning on tobacco, according to the latest report of the Canadian Cancer Society, reports UNB.
The society published its ‘Cigarette Package Health Warnings: International Status Report, 2016’ that ranked 205 countries across the world, said a press release from Progga, an anti-tobacco campaigner in Bangladesh, on Wednesday.
As per the 5th edition of the report, Bangladesh has notched up 53 positions to the 57th from the last 4th edition of the report published in 2014.
Some 152 out of 205 countries implemented the health warning on tobacco packs. And 105 countries, including Bangladesh, made graphical health warning (GHW) implementation mandatory on tobacco packets.
In Bangladesh, the graphical warning is available on both sides of tobacco packs covering 50 per cent of the entire pack spaces.
In the report, Nepal and Vanuatu have jointly been ranked the first position as the both countries implemented GHW covering 90 per cent space of both front and back sides of tobacco packets, while India and Thailand jointly third with 85 per cent GHW on tobacco packets.
Among other top countries, Thailand shows GHW covering 85 per cent space of the entire tobacco packets, while Australia 82.2 per cent, Sri Lanka and Uruguay 80 per cent, as well as Brunei, Canada, Lao P.D.R and Myanmar 75 per cent. Though Bangladesh has stepped ahead in consideration of overall scenarios, it has long way to go comparing the South-East Asian countries, especially Nepal, India, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
