Donald Trump who, proving all the naysayers wrong, is going to become the 45th president of the Unite States. His victory capped glorious run by a non-elite and an outsider who generated a huge following especially among working class America who gave a thumbs down to establishment politics and the mainstream media.
The 70-year-old real estate mogul — who is the oldest person ever elected to a first presidential term and also the first one to do so without ever holding any government or military positions before — after winning on Wednesday said that his opponent Clinton had conceded the election and that it's time for USA "to come together as one united people."
His surging ahead as the poll results were coming out from different states was stunning. While opinion polls all through the pre-poll campaign found Hillary at the forefront in the race for presidency, she even retained clear edge over Trump after the FBI chief exploded the bombshell about Hillary’s e-mail scandal. Belying all these the US voters loudly spoke in favour of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton had to concede defeat.
Yet the victory speech that Trump made was encouraging. We would like to believe that as president Donald Trump will live up to the expectations created by his speech in which he called himself a president of all Americans and he wanted to work taking with him all nations of the world. We, along with the rest of the world would like to see him unite a divided US and fulfill aspirations of his citizens and lead the world. We hope that he will reach out to those who opposed him and also remove the ill will and unease created by some of the statements that he made during the hard fought campaign.
Through Trump’s election as the president, one thing has become pretty clear: US citizens are more interested about creation of more jobs and overall economic wellbeing of the nation than about its foreign policy. “Make America Great Again”, the Republican slogan of election campaign, focused this economic aspiration and surely Donald Trump will have to deliver in this line as the incumbent president.
As far as the international politics is concerned, the role of US being the only superpower can hardly be overemphasized. American standing in the world largely depends on how responsibly it handles its affairs in the distant shores. Donald Trump has proved that he has this rare ability to make the seemingly impossible possible.
And his ability to surprise is quite staggering. Earlier in the year he improbably defeated experienced and powerful candidates in the Republican primary. He has then gone on even more improbably to challenge and defeat Hillary Clinton. However the former Secretary of State deserves plaudits for the dignified manner she run her campaign.
Despite all the press criticism about Trump’s candidacy inside and outside the US, American democracy has chosen Donald Trump forcing his popular democratic rival Clinton to concede defeat.
Best of luck the new US president-elect.
