The BNP is still firm on holding its rally either at Suhrawardy Udyan or in front of the party's central office at Naya Paltan, to mark its “National Revolution and Solidarity Day”, according to party sources. The police announced in a press statement yesterday afternoon that the BNP was given permission to hold its rally at the Institution of Engineers on a 27-point charter of conditions. One of the conditions is that the rally has to begin at 2pm and end by 4:30pm, but the party did not accept it. “The police did not give us any letter of permission, but disclosed it in a press statement. We came to know about it after the press conference of party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party office at 12 noon,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. “We will not hold any indoor meeting. We sought permission for an open-air rally and will not budge,” he added. He also said they had not sought permission for the Institution of Engineers to hold their rally. The BNP leader said the party decided not to hold a rally at a venue other Suhrawardy Udyan. He further said a fresh application has been submitted to the authorities concerned seeking permission for holding a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 13.
Earlier, at a press conference, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that the party would hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 13. He expressed the hope that the government would extend cooperation in this regard. In a press statement, Rizvi accused the police of creating confusion over the venue of the BNP’s proposed rally. He termed the police statement on giving permission for the Institution of Engineers as farcical, saying they had not applied for that venue.
The BNP leader also accused the police of dilly-dallying on the issue for the past few days. The police ignored the democratic rights of the Opposition by not giving permission for the rally, he said. The BNP would hold its rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 13, he asserted. “We have applied to the authorities concerned seeking permission for the venue. The BNP has completed all preparations to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan,” he added.
On October 20, the BNP decided to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan either on November 7 or 8, but the police did not give permission for the rally. On November 6, the BNP sought permission to hold its rally in front of the party headquarters and expressed its determination to hold it at any cost.
