37 more Bangladeshi migrants held in Libya

STAFF REPORTER

At least 37 more Bangladeshis, who tried to reach Italy from Libya crossing the Mediterranean, were detained yesterday by the Libyan coast guard. With this, the tally of Bangladeshi fortune seekers detained and rescued from human traffickers in Libya in the last couple of weeks stood at 102. The 37 new detainees are now kept at a detention centre in Libya’s Gharyan town, around 100km south of the capital Tripoli. They were detained along with around 300 foreign fortune seekers from the Libyan coast in the Mediterranean Sea. A Bangladesh Embassy delegation met with the detainees and learned that all of them had been brought to Libya by human traffickers. The embassy officials assured them of providing necessary assistance. Currently, more than 30,000 Bangladeshis are working in a risky situation in the North African country that repatriated 32,000 Bangladeshis in 2011 soon after the overthrow of its long-time military ruler Muammer Gaddafi.
