To explore Bangladesh’s position and future progress in denim industry, the fifth Bangladesh Denim Expo began at International Convention City Bashundhara, in the capital yesterday.
‘Sustainable product evolution that respects our planet’ is the motto of this year’s Expo. The two-day expo is segmented into different integral parts and keynote foreign speakers, top corporate CEO’s (Chief Executive Officers) and foreign diplomats were present at the first day as well.
A total of 55 exhibitors from Bangladesh, India Pakistan, Hongkong, Thailand, Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, South Korea and Vietnam are displaying their products in the 5th edition of the show with the theme ‘Natural Denim’.
Ambassador of Sweden to Bangladesh Johan Frisell said: “This is high time for Bangladesh to think about the long term market access and to EU as an export destination. After achieving the status of middle income country status, it would not get any trade benefits under GSP (Generalised Scheme of Preferences) facilities”
“Market strategy and production sustainability, both are the required criteria for buyers for the next five years. Bangladesh will work to get GSP plus, so buyers can invest here and source from here as well,” he also described.
He also mentioned that, after achieving the middle income country status, Bangladesh will pay 12 per cent tax.
At the expo, German Ambassador to Bangladesh Thomas Prinz has urged for branding “made in Bangladesh” to concentrate on environmental and social compliance issues.
“The progress in ready made garments (RMG) for safety standards has already been made, but has to keep on the process for the sustainability,” Printz added.
Global Sales Director of Garmon, Marco Nava, a chemical supplier, told this correspondent that “No doubt, Bangladesh is the next future in textile and RMG industry. Bangladesh needs fast, unique and innovative technology at this moment, so for better colors in cloths, new technology is a must.”
“We came here for showcasing our authentic products to our leads (prospects buyer) and build a rapport with them. The volume of this industry is 3.5 billion at this moment and this kind of fabric is entirely new in Bangladesh,” explained Executive Sales and Marketing, Square Denims ltd Tanveer Mahmood.
Multiple special events of live demonstration were also held in the expo, including natural indigo dye by Living Blue which frames and processes natural indigo known as “Bengal Indigo”, and hand loom machine for salvage denim & hand scrapping. Moreover, the booths in the expo were made from sustainable and locally sourced materials.
