Police received 5000 messages from people across the country about suspected militant activities through its Hello CT since August 1 with officials welcoming the response calling it the outcome of a nationwide anti-militancy campaign launched since July 1 terrorist attack on a Dhaka cafe.
“We have so far got 5000 messages from the people about alleged militant activities . . . several of these messages led us tracking down the militants successfully,” police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit official Sanowar Hossain told BSS. Hossain, an additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said on receipt of messages as tip offs, police verify their authenticity using their own sources and then carryout clampdowns in required cases.
“But the people’s eagerness in informing police about the suspected militants reflects ordinary citizens enhanced awareness against the menace,” he said.
The official said police previously required to act on the basis of sporadic information on crimes while “the app is helping us to deal with militancy in a more organised way”.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan launched the new mobile application, Hello CT on August 1 last as an android application but officials said the app would be available soon at the apple store.
The app was developed by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of Bangladesh Police while with its help anyone can contact the police if he or she notices anything suspicious which could be linked to militancy.
