The High Court yesterday granted bail to Shipon, a local of Sutrapur area in the city, who was imprisoned for 17 years in a murder case without any trial, until the settlement of the case. The High Court bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hasan granted his bail following report published in the media stating that Shipon was in imprisonment for last 17-year without any trial.
In its order, the HC bench ordered the Dhaka Additional District Judge’s Court for the settlement of the case within two months. It also directed Dhaka Legal Aid Office to take necessary steps for submission of papers of his bail without any cost.
The court asked Dhaka District Administration for providing support to the victim’s rehabilitation, if needed. Earlier in 1994, a man was killed in a clash between two groups in Sutrapur area in the capital. Later the victim’s relatives filed a case in connection with the murder, making Shipon no. 2 accused in the case.
Police arrested Shipon in 2000 and a court sent him to jail. He was shifted to Kashimpur Jail on November 7 last year. Recently, an investigative report was aired in a private television channel in this regard. Later, Supreme Court lawyer Kumar Debol Dey sought the High Court’s attention by submitting the report.
Deputy attorney general KM Johirul Haque represented the state during yesterday’s proceeding.
