Khaleda wants party reform

The BNP has decided to reform its associate and front organisations after the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr in a bid to gear up the party’s organisational activities.
The decision came at a meeting of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia with her party’s senior leaders at her Gulshan office around 9:10pm yesterday.
“The existing committees of different associate bodies and front organization of the party will be reorganised after Eid-ul-fitr,” a senior BNP leader, who was present at the meeting, told The Independent requesting anonymity.
Sources said the BNP chief expressed her annoyance at those party leaders who were involved in making indiscriminate statements regarding the party.
However, after the meeting, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan briefed journalists. He said they discussed about the party’s latest organisational condition and the country’s current political situation.
He said the party chief asked them to go to their respective constituencies and stand by the family members of those party leaders and activists who have fall victim to ‘government rage’ during its recent three-month-long movement.
Meanwhile, the BNP chief yesterday called upon all concerned to get united by barring all the differences of opinion and views.
“A fair election should be held in participation of all for a beautiful tomorrow.  Those who win the polls, will form the government,” she said while speaking at an iftar mahfil organised by Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh at a hotel in the capital.
The former premier said, there should not be divisions and differences among the people.
“We will be able to build a beautiful country, if we can unite all forces. Then, we will be able to honour the sacrifice of 30 lakh martyrs of the liberation war and uphold the sprit of the War of Liberation.
The BNP chairperson reiterated her demand for holding a free, fair and participatory election. Terming the present government an ‘unelected’ one, she alleged that women are being repressed frequently during the rule of this ‘unelected’ government and women are being humiliated even in Parliament.
Khaleda criticised Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad for his comments that termed women as ‘showpiece’ and said these people do not know how to remain courteous to women.
Bikalpa Dhara President Prof Dr Badruddoza Chowdhury urged all democratic forces to get united and come forward by forgetting small mistakes, wrongs and differences.
UNB adds: Earlier in the day, the BNP called unbecoming and unexpected Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque’s statement countering the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s comment and asking her to be ‘more responsible’ in making remarks about police.
The party also voiced concern that the IGP’s comment over the violence during its anti-government movement may influence the cases filed against the opposition leaders and activists in this connection.
“There’re certainly some genuine logic and observation behind the BNP chairperson’s allegation against police. But the police chief’s statement countering her remarks is completely unexpected and unbecoming,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon while addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
