With only a day left for the US elections, all eyes are set on the 5 battleground states that have total 95 ‘undecided’ electoral college votes and appear to be the key for the candidates to enter the White House. Though, till today the opinion polls show US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton having a lead in 3 of these 5 states, any upset in these states may shatter her dream to become the first women president in the most powerful country of the world. According to the latest combined polls, Clinton has a lead of 47 to 46 per cent over her Republican rival Donald Trump in Florida which has 29 electoral college votes. In Pennsylvania, which has 20 electoral college votes, she has a lead of 46 to 43.6 per cent and in Virginia, having 13 electoral college votes, she has a lead over Trump of 47.3 to 42.3 per cent.
On the other hand, in Ohio, which has 18 votes, Trump is ahead with 46.6 per cent over Clinton’s 45 per cent and in North Carolina the race is currently tied with both claiming 46. 4 per cent.
If the situation remains unchanged, Clinton may become the winner as she has a lead in states having over 200 electoral college votes. But if Trump can manage to win in all these 5 states, things will turn upside down for Clinton. Out of the total 538 electoral college votes of the 50 states and the capital, a candidate needs at least 270 votes to be elected the president of the United Stated of America.
However, analysts believe that with the FBI announcement on Sunday that cleared Clinton in the e-mail issue, things are unlikely to go against her. Last week, the FBI decision to probe into Clinton’s use of private e-mail server had badly dented her campaign, sliding her ratings in the opinion polls.
Both Clinton and Trump concluded their long and vigorous election campaign yesterday. In her closing addresses, Clinton focused on her policy to make a stronger future for America and warned Americans that November 8 will be the day of ‘make or break’ for the Americans.
On the other hand, Trump ended with his ususal anti-establishment tone, urging voters to get rid of the corrupt political leadership that was running the US governments for decades.
Among Bangladeshi people living in the US, many are actively campaigning for Clinton. They are also upbeat about the likelihood of victory for Clinton.
“90 per cent of the Bangladeshi community people are supporting Clinton as we believe her policy on immigration, taxing and family care would be more beneficial to us,” Moin Choudhury, a New York attorney and an organiser of the Clinton Campaign told The Independent. “We have organised fundraising programmes for her in New York,” he added. Dr Wazed A khan, editor of a local Bengali weekly, said, “Most Bangladeshis feel that they will not be comfortable with a Trump presidency.” “Even many Republicans believe that Trump is not fit for running a country like the USA,” he added.
