The weeklong income tax fair that began on November 1 across the country drew huge crowd on the last day of fair yesterday, helping the National Board of Revenue (NBR) collect record Tk 2,130 crore as income tax.
Yesterday, thousands of tax payers came to the fair to submit their tax return.
On last day’s receipt, the total income tax collection in seven days from the seventh national income tax fair stood at Tk 2129.68 crore as income tax, compared to Tk 2,035.32 crore last year, which is Tk 94.31 crore more compared to the last year’s fair, NBR data shows.
Taxpayers and potential taxpayers who work mainly in public and private sectors rushed to the fair venues yesterday.
They were seen waiting in long queues in front of booths for paying income tax, filing tax returns, obtaining user ID and password for getting access to online tax returns submission system and receiving online taxpayers identification numbers at fair venues across the country including the venue for the capital at the NBR’s under-construction headquarters at Agargoan in the capital.
The last day's collection was Tk 401.96 crore and income tax returns submitted by 44,608 taxpayers, while 151775 people received services on the day.
"Availability of easy services and awareness campaigns helped the fair get huge response," said an NBR official.
The special feature of the fair, which attracted a huge number of people to income tax fair, was its one-stop services including registration of electronic taxpayer identification number (eTIN), submission of income tax returns and online payment facilities.
Many taxpayers waiting in long queues for depositing tax in front of the booths of Sonali and Janata banks were uncertain till 5pm before the closing time of the fair, whether they would be able to pay the tax on the day.
A seven member team of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Finance led by its chairman Abdur Razzak MP visited the fair.
While visiting the fair, Abdur Razzak said: “Tax fair is for increasing the income revenue of Bangladesh. Ten years back, our budget used to be Tk 22,000 crore of which 8 to 10 per cent was from foreign aid ,but now the country’s development budget is Tk 1, 20,000 crore and the contribution of foreign aid is only 2 per cent of the entire budget. This has been possible because of income taxpayers which helped the country to achieve this feat.”
Standing Committee on Ministry of Home, Tipu Munshi was also present at the fair and said; “The GDP growth rate has increased than previous and it touched to 7.05 per cent, which indicates that the revenue is bound to improve eventually”.
He also added that the enthusiasm and large participants at the tax fair indicates that tax-friendly practice environment has already been created and has encouraged a huge amount of people to pay their tax returns.
