Left-spinner Abdur Razzak on Monday said that they pin their hopes on the team’s right combination to break the title drought of the cash-rich Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 tournament.
Chittagong performed their best result in the second edition of the BPL in 2013 when they conceded defeat to Dhaka in the final. Thereafter, they could not cross the hurdle of the group phase.
This time Chittagong Vikings under the new ownership formed a well-balanced team with the blend of the quality local and foreign players.
They bolstered their top-order and middle-order with West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith, Pakistan spin all-rounder Shoaib Malik, Sri Lankan all-rounder Chaturanga De Silva, Jeevan Mendis, Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, New Zealand batsman Grant Elliott, Pakistan pace all-rounder Imran Khan and English all-rounder Tymal Mills.
Along with them, hard-hitter opener Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque Bijoy, Taskin Ahmed, Abdur Razzak, Shubashis Roy, Jahurul Islam (WK), Nazmul Hossain Milon, Zakir Hasan, Saqlain Sojib, Shahidul Islam, Yasir Ali Chowdhury and Jubair Hossain Likhon will join from the local stocks.
“I feel well to see the team combination of Chittagong Vikings. It has been a well-balanced team with the local and foreign players. It is possible to play better cricket by this team. Sometimes, win-loss hinge on luck. Despite this we will fight for championship,” said Abdur Razzak.
Razzak, who had played 79 T20s including 34 for Bangladesh after being made his international debut in 2004, played at three different franchisee teams in the last three editions, where he played 27 matches and took 30 wickets with the best of 4-33. He last played for Sylhet following Khulna and Rangpur Riders.
The 34-year-old spinner said that he wants to bring the success for the team as per the expectation of the team.
“Bowlers made the difference of the match unless the expected result will be not come. The team purchased us to perform. So, we have to fare well. I will try my level best to bowl well in the need of the team,” Razzak told reporters after the gap of their practice session yesterday.
Chittagong is ahead of their spin attack than other teams. Besides Abdur Razzak, the team has spinners and spin all-rounders like Shoaib Malik, Chaturanga De Silva, Mohammad Nabi, Jubair Likhon and Saqlain Sojib.
The team has to face a big test in their first match of BPL campaign. Chittagong Vikings will face-off defending champions Comilla Victorians in the opener of the BPL-4 at 2pm today. They took a better preparation and so Razzak expects a positive result from the opening match.
“The change has been developed in all the teams. There is nothing to worry about it. Our preparation has been better. For this we are hopeful of
doing better,” Khulna-born Razzak said.
