While Dhaka Dynamites starts its BPL-4 campaign with the match against defending runners-up Barisal Bulls after the tournament gets a forced restart due to the inclement weather, they would be definitely haunted by the past results in the past edition of the tournament.
Barisal won all the three matches including winning the eliminator game which heartbreakingly ended Dhaka’s campaign after they established them one of the contenders for the title.
Barisal, the eventual runners-up of the past tournament beat Dhaka by nine wickets and two wickets in the group phase and then secured an 18-run victory in a low-scoring eliminator game.
While those stats are not encouraging for the Dhaka, it would certainly keep them interested to make avenge. And definitely a good start against the runners-up would be a booster to keep them on course of the title which eluded them in the past edition.
Dhaka is now a vastly different side from the one they fielded in the last tournament. They have an Icon in Shakib Al Hasan, unarguably the most charismatic man who played the all of the domestic T20 tournament across the world. Shakib’s T20 experience is much higher than not only any other player in the country but also the overseas players who are playing in BPL.
While in middle order Shakib would get the presence of cricket brain and legends like Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, perhaps Dhaka would be far ahead than in any other team because of the presence of Andre Russel in lower middle order. A hard-hitter batsman, also a useful seamer Russel’s match-winning capability is well documented. He remains the long term teammate of Shakib in IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders and so their combination is expected to bring up the goods. There is another charismatic character Dwayne Bravo, a champion in his own style and song. Bravo’s deadly slower and handy batting made Chennai Kings a supremely successful team in IPL history. If just one between Bravo and Russell plays to their potential, Dhaka would be hard to resist this time.
Jayawardene and Sangakkara both retired from the international cricket but still they have enough power to make a mockery with any kind of bowling line up. Dhaka also got a promising youngster like Evin Lewis, the lone centurion of past BPL. The West Indian youth made his debut in BPL with Barisal Bulls in the last year and subsequently make the cut in the West Indies national team. Dhaka also has the foreign players like Seukgge Prasanna, South African speedster Wayne Parnel, England’s all-rounder Ravi Bopara, so it would be interesting who the four players they would field for the today’s game.
“Since there was no gap, we had to adjust that way. Continuous cricket can make adverse impact but the good thing is that we have got enough back up players in local and foreign circuit. So I am not much worried about the consistent cricket,” said Shakib Al Hasan.
But according to Shakib, the star-studded line up couldn’t bring anything in T20 cricket unless the team fire as a unit.
“Last year I played for Rangpur, who formed the most balanced team on paper but you know the result. We have a good team and its combination has also been better. But it is important to perform in the field.”
On paper Dhaka Dynamites looked more powerful than what Barisal got but the defending runners-up also has the player to come all guns blazing. Mahmudullah Riyad is not in the team this time but they got the core foreign players who played a vital role in propelling the team to the final. Ryad Emrit was one of them and he would be joined by Carlos Brathwaite, the man whose famous four straight sixes helped West Indies clinch the World T20 this year. There are players like Thisara Perera, Dilshan Munaraweera, Dawid Malan, Joshua Cobb who could be handy in any condition.
“Our main strength lies in our bowling. Bowlers can win you the game. So I am happy that we got a balanced bowling side,” said Shahriar Nafees.
