A court here on Sunday afternoon sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry in 2015.
The convict was Sumon Munshi, 25, son of Abul Munshi from Dingamanik village under Mehendiganj Upazila of the district. The court also fined the convict Tk 1 lakh.
Sheikh Abu Taher, judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal of Barisal, handed down the verdict on Sunday afternoon in presence of the accused after examining 18 witnesses and other documents.
Advocate Fayezul Haque Fayez, public prosecutor of the court, said Sumon married Sathi, daughter of Anis Hawladar, in 2013.
After their marriage, Sumon and his family members often tortured Sathi for dowry. On 20 June 2015, Sathi informed her family members about the torture. On June 21, 2015, Sabuj, one of the family members of Sumon, informed Sathi’s father that she died suddenly. Victim’s father Anis Hawlader filed a murder case with Mehendiganj police station on the day accusing Sumon, his mother and two brothers, on the same night.
Sub-Inspector Tarik Hasan, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against Sumon Munshi on November 7, 2015.
