Neutralising militancy

Drives against extremists should continue until they are totally crushed

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid  while addressing a massive rally titled "Improved Atmosphere for Education and Militancy-free Academic Institutions" at Rangpur Zila School ground recently  stressed on launching vigorous social movement against militancy and creating congenial academic atmosphere to properly educate the new generations as builders of modern Bangladesh, according to a report in this newspaper on Sunday.  He urged heads of the educational institutions, teachers, guardians and all citizens to  remain alert and work to save the students from the evil forces and misinterpretation of Islam, the religion of peace.
Students are the future of the country. Future of the country greatly depends on their proper grooming up. So, alongside their academic courses they should be given lessons in moral aspects of life. By   freeing the educational institutions from militancy and creating congenial academic atmosphere and ensuring quality education students of those institutions can be prepared for shouldering the responsibility of the country. The guardians and teachers of the respective educational institutions can play vital roles in this regard.
It is unfortunate to note that the vested quarters were misguiding some students by misinterpreting Islam to involve them with militancy for lowering the image of the country. The students   should be inspired to take part in extra-curricular activities like sports, debate and other competitions to create social movement against militancy and misinterpretation of religion. They should also be imbued with rich Bengali culture, heritage and history.
The forces of darkness are against any kind of progress that a country achieves. They are guided by blind justice and are out to smear the good image of the same. They do not deserve compassion and empathy.
There is no substitute for rooting out militancy from the soil of Bangladesh. If peaceful environment persists in the country, local and foreign investors will come forward to set up industries. This will create employment opportunity for the jobless people on the one hand and strengthen the economy of the country on the other.
The present government has taken tough stand against militancy and fundamentalism in the light of strong secular and democratic credentials. It has brought many a perpetrator to justice. However, there is no room for expressing complacency. Much more should be done. The drives against extremists should continue until they are totally crushed. Constant vigilance is needed to ensure  safety and security of citizens.
