Tk 2.92cr project transforms Tangail DC Lake into vibrant tourist spot

Falani, a Class IV student of a government primary school on the outskirts of Tangail city, often comes to Tangail DC Lake with her mother, who works as a domestic help. Falani is delighted to frequently visit the lake, as is her mother—since it does not cost them anything. The government has allowed indigent visitors to enter the lake without the usual fee of Tk10.As college student Aminul observed, “Nature and technology have been blended at the lake. Everyone gets free Wi-Fi and free Internet facilities at the ‘Laker’s View’, which has been built on the water.”‘Tangail DC Lake’ has turned into an enchanting and fascinating tourist spot in the district. Earlier, the selfsame lake was widely considered the dirtiest place in Tangail town. Previously known as ‘District Lake’, it has been transformed into a picture-postcard place and has been renamed ‘DC Lake’.Cabinet secretary Shafiul Alam formally inaugurated the newly built lake on September 23.
Tangail deputy commissioner (DC)  Mahbub Hossain is responsible for the renovation of DC Lake. He came to Tangail as its DC three years ago. He decided to transform the area in the district lake, which was being used to dump garbage, into a tourist spot. The area was not only the dirtiest in the city, it had become a safe haven for antisocial elements.
“Influential persons had even built different structures by grabbing the land,” said the DC.The project, undertaken at a cost of Tk. 2,919,5000 in 2015, covering an area of 33.45 acres, aimed to turn the area into an attractive recreational tourist spot. Additional funds were then collected locally and spent on beautifying the area and establishing a children’s park. A two-storied dome-shaped viewing deck was built in the middle of the lake. The dome and the nearby road are decorated with colourful lamps. Statues of tigers, monkeys, eagles and other animals have been set up close to the lake.Replete with flower gardens and fruit trees, the park has 600 pitchers next to trees around the lake for attracting birds. Food corners have also been set up.  Plans have been chalked out to build a fountain in the middle of the lake, a swimming pool, a butterfly park and a mini-zoo around it, said the DC.“The initiatives to protect the lake and develop it were undertaken following the directives of the government to protect all water bodies in the country. Apart from offering various kinds of entertainment to visitors, the project also employs 20 people,” he added.
