Unfortunate and shameful

Say senior leaders of AL allies
Abu Jakir

Condemning the synchronised attacks on Hindus in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar, senior leaders of Awami League’s alliance partners have said that the involvement of local AL leaders in the attacks was “unfortunate and shameful”. They also criticised what they called “irresponsible statements” from AL ministers, MPs, and other key leaders in this connection. They demanded immediate punishment for those who were responsible for the atrocities on the minority community, irrespective of the culprits’ party affiliation. They said the culprits should be tried under a special tribunal so that no one dares to carry out such attacks in the future in Bangladesh, which has a tradition of communal harmony.
“It is shameful and worrisome that AL local leaders, including a UP chairman, were among those involved in Sunday’s attacks on the minority community in Nasirnagar,” Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon told The Independent yesterday. He said his party had sent a delegation to Nasirnagar and found that the attacks were pre-planned and local AL leaders, including its chairman, were involved in it. The common people of Nasirnagar have not taken the matter well.
Rashed Khan, also the civil aviation and tourism minister, said the Sheikh Hasina administration should take stern action against the culprits immediately, irrespective of their party affiliation.Talking to The Independent yesterday, Sharif Nurul Ambia, chief of a faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, an alliance partner of AL, said there is no doubt that Sunday’s incident was pre-planned. The involvement of AL local leaders is “shameful and worrisome”, he added.
Condemning the attacks, the alliance leader said the government would not be able to curb such incidents if the protectors turned into looters. Ambia also suggested that the AL-led government should not forgive its party leaders for taking part in such heinous attacks. He also called upon other alliance leaders to stick to their respective ideologies and protest against such shameful incidents to maintain communal harmony in the country.
