Shakhawat Hossain Rony struck twice in the second half, as Sheikh Russel celebrated their third win in the JB Bangladesh Premier League football when they blanked giant-killers Rahmatganj MFS by 2-0 yesterday.
It was great satisfaction for Sheikh Russel, as by virtue of winning the match they lifted their position from bottom to 10 making the point tally 11.
Rahmatganj, who was one of the table toppers up to 10th round, could not maintain the tremendous run after suffering defeats in consecutive matches to Dhaka giants Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club.
The Old Dhaka outfit have been demonstrating outstanding performance since their league opener, suffered the defeats after maintaining the unbeaten run up to 10 encounters and nosedived to third from top position.
The daylong drizzle made the ground of the Bangabandhu National Stadium soggy and slippery, so both the sides could not play their usual game as they were losing ball possessions very often and were also failing to execute passes accurately.
Though there was a great question, who was the day’s favourites – sensational Rahamtganj or big budgeted Sheikh Russel, while the All Blues endeavor was to survive from the most difficult situation and the former to bounce back to remain in the top fights.
Sheikh Russel, who formed the team for championship fight but have been struggling to get out of relegation threat and every game turned into a do or die match for them, as they have no option left but to win.
On the other hand, it was the match for Rahmatganj to come back for lifting the position but conceded 2-0 defeat, remain on third, while Rahmatganj began their winning run with defeating Russel in their second match with the same margin in Chittagong.
However, the first half looked very disorganised, as none of the teams failed to match with the slippery condition of the ground and nothing but some half chances were produced from both sides and their forwards failed to cash in.
After the break, the match got some pace, as both sides became aggressive to get goals and from a counter attack, Sheikh Russel drew the first blood with taking the lead through Shakhawat Rony.
It was just an ordinary move built up from the Russel area and Rummon Hossain after receiving the possession of a long ball in an open space ran past defenders and paved the way for onrushing Rony who placed the ball into the far post on 51st minute (1-0).
Rony doubled the margin three minutes later and this time it was almost a gifted goal when Rahmatganj goalkeeper failed to grip in a ball and trying to save a corner just revolved the ball from the line but Rony was very near to him and got the ball before to push into the open net (2-0).
Rest of the time Rahamtganj worked hard to snatch at least a point but all their efforts came in vain when Russel defense looked better than the other days.
