Eight ‘robbers’ held in capital
Police in overnight raids arrested eight alleged robbers with sharp weapons from Paltan, Darussalam and Rampura police stations of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) area.
According to a DMP press release, a team of Paltan police led by Sub-Inspector Samen Barua arrested four alleged robbers while taking preparations to commit a robbery near Maulana Bhasani Stadium at about 1:30am yesterday. The arrestees are identified as Mohammad Minar Hossain, Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Mohammad Hasan and Mohammad Ridoy. Sharp weapons including one machete, one knife and iron rod were recovered from their possessions. Earlier, police arrested two -- Mohammad Sohel and Sumon alias Kata Suman - from Darussalam Foot-Over Bridge and two others - Alamin and Ripon - - from Malibag area under Rampura Police Station. Sharp weapons were also recovered from them. Separate three cases were filed with the respective police stations.

Woman killed in road accident
A woman was killed in a road accident while a CNG run auto-rickshaw dashed her in Gowainghat Upazila in the district yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Adorini Rani, 60, of Gowainghat Upazila. Chairman of Gowainghat Upazila Abdul Hakim Chowdhury said the accident occurred at about 10 am on Sylhet-Gowainghat road when she was returned with her grand-daughter from the school. Adorini died on the spot, he added. Officer-in-Charge of Gowainghat Thana Md Jahangir Hossain confirmed the accident news.

One killed in lightning strike 
A young man was killed and four others injured by a lightning strike at Hussainpur village in Balaganj upazila on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Amros Ali, 38, a resident of the village. Police and witnesses said Amros along with some farmers was cultivating his land beside Kapna beel (wetland) in the area when a thunderbolt hit them around 10:00am, leaving Amros dead on the spot and four others injured. The injured were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Road accident kills police constable
A police constable of Rangamati Sadar thana was killed and another constable received injuries in a road accident in Doulatpur area under Patiya thana in the district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Karim, 30, a constable of Rangamati Sadar thana, hailed from Banskhali upazila of the district. The accident occurred when a passenger bus collided head-on the with a motorbike on PAB Sarak of Patiya-Anwara-Banskhali in Doulatpur area, leaving bike riders Karim, and Rubel Das,30, injured critically, said Reazaul Karim, Officer-in-Charge (investigation) of Patiya thana said. They were rushed to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where the on-duty doctors declared Karim dead. Rubel Das, another constable of Rangamati sadar thana is undergoing treatment at the CMCH. 

29 arrested in capital
The law enforcement agencies in an anti-illegal drugs drive at different parts of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) area arrested 29 people for their alleged involvement in drug abuse in the past 24 hours.
"Different contraband items including some 1,076 pieces of yaba tablets, 330 grams of heroin and 425 pieces of Buprenorphine injections were also seized from their possessions" said a press release yesterday.
