Stocks book third straight loss

Dhaka stocks booked their third consecutive loss yesterday as pre-festival selling of shares for cashing in continued amidst low level of buying sentiment among investors, reports BSS.  
The broader DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) ended 9.28 points down at 4526.71, but still closed over 4500 points mark with support from the relatively higher activities around the blue-chip securities.  The blue-chip DS30 managed to finish the session in green though the upward move was mere 2.86 points to 1764.49.
The Shariah DSES closed flat in red at 1110.56.  Participation levels were low, but short-covering and bargain-buying helped the indices to avoid big slide.
The daily trade value fell by 9.59 per cent to Tk 423.32 crore and the volume declined by 8.67 per cent to 11.31 crore shares.
Lanka Bangla Securities Limited said traders were reluctant to take fresh positions in broader market.  However, few blue-chip stocks were actively traded yesterday as current market price of those enticed buying interest among investors.
IDLC Investment Limited attributed the continuous fall to cautious buying of the investors who were watchful about the ensuing annual declaration. A number of listed companies would announce their yearly financial results in coming few weeks, which would have considerable amount of impact on the market.
Consumer goods stocks and multi-national companies (MNCs) were on the top turnover list. These included United Air, ACI, Olympic Accessories, ACI Formulation and Square Pharmaceuticals.
Share prices of 107 securities were moderately up while 165 closed lower and 49 remained unchanged. Sonali Ansh, Standard Ceramic, Olympic Accessories, Monno Ceramic and FBFIF were day’s top five advancing securities.
The major gaining sectors were cement, pharmaceuticals and mutual fund while bank, fuel and allied and NBFI were among the major lagging sectors. The major losing companies Pragati Life, RN Spinning, ICB1stNRB, Stylecraft and Eastern Lub.
Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) finished the day lower, with its general CSCX index closing the session 10.89 points down at 8487.52.
Out of traded 244 issues, 117 declined, 87 advanced and 40 remained unchanged.
The day’s trade value was Tk 35.02 crore for 1.18 crore shares.
